21st May: Diary #2

Second diary attempt! This week has been a continuation of the project from hell, Kwik Sew 4045, moving into brighter times with Simplicity 1286 instead. It’s still in progress so hopefully you can expect it completed in next week’s diary entry! I’m writing this diary a day early as I’m out of the house on […]

Second diary attempt! This week has been a continuation of the project from hell, Kwik Sew 4045, moving into brighter times with Simplicity 1286 instead. It’s still in progress so hopefully you can expect it completed in next week’s diary entry! I’m writing this diary a day early as I’m out of the house on Friday!

I’ve been putting together a much better Pinterest board with all my planned makes and fabrics. Nearly everything from the Spring Projects is on here, plus a few extras that have sneaked into the board. But we’re getting there!

I’m also hoping to announce another competition soon but lets not hold our breath, it’s a busy week. I’m off to the Surrey County Show this bank holiday, lets see if I come home with anything exciting! I’m also off to a Eurovision party, there might be some pictures of my costume next week!

Overlocker Fun (?!)

Very exciting news, I have purchased an overlocker! I’ve been considering buying one for years but my recent foray into menswear, including these shorts, has given the casting¬†stitch on my machine a lot of legwork. I want to be able to sew knits, as I’m seeing so many more knits patterns these days. I got this Singer overlocker second hand and I’ll be attending a course in July to help me understand it a little more.

I’ve also been recommended The Ultimate Serger Answer Guide as apparently it’s very good for helping with all those confusing questions! It was only ¬£13.99 so a nice book to keep hold of for the future too.

Sewing Zip Fly Closures

I’ve had a fair bit of practice with these zip fly’s now! First on K4045 and then again on Simplicity 1286. I’m definitely getting the hang of it, but I have to say it is fiddly! I recently purchased a Craftsy class to try and help me with these zip fly’s and I will sit down this week and watch it.

Learning with Craftsy

I’ve been enjoying going through my first Craftsy class this week, Mastering Construction: Zippers and Waistbands which I am finding so helpful. I will be focusing on creating practice samples of the zip fly to use on the shorts over the next week. It’s really great to have a video class showing me exactly what to do, including how to redraft pieces from an existing pattern to create a proper zipper fly. It even comes with a tiny scale pattern that I’ve printed ready to sew up over the long weekend.

Reading List: Threads Magazine & Champagne Supernovas

On my reading list this week has been two copies of Threads magazine, which finally arrived from America. Lots of interesting features I’m working through reading. Especially interested in their zip tutorials as I always struggle to get perfect zips!

And after visiting the Alexander McQueen exhibition a few weeks ago, I’m back to reading Champagne Supernovas. The stories of Kate Moss, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Isabella Blow. It’s a really interesting book and I’m enjoying finding out more about these people, it’s almost like a combined biography.

Planning with Toyota Home Sewing

I have the day off from my day-job to attend a meeting with Toyota Home Sewing to discuss our content plans for the next year, exciting stuff! We’ll be deciding what blogs we want to write over the next year, including all the fun competitions and inspirational posts. I’ll be driving over from Surrey to Kent in the morning to go to the meeting and meeting up with my good friend Thryn, who works on the social media channels with me. Then it’s home to enjoy time off until after the bank holiday.

What are you up to this weekend? Any sewing plans?
